In the US, we have a system of Social Security, that helps you out if you become unable to work for any number of reasons. After being prompted by a few different people, I shoved my tail between my legs and applied. While I qualify on the basis of impairments, I was disqualified. Why? You must meet the criteria for work credits, which boiled down to five years work out of the last ten years. I came up six months short of that. I have four children aged 10 through 1.
Where do you think I have been those five years and six months? Six months short.
So, I asked the woman, "If I went to work for six months and re-applied?"
"Well, then you'd qualify." But, I can't work, can I? At least, not for now, not for a while!
She apologized, there's nothing "we can do for you, but you do qualify for RETIREMENT!"
Gee. Can't Wait!
Seriously, I want have to work at some level. I can't drive. We don't have public transport here. We're not moving. Can one sell narcotics from home? What can I do? I'm not refusing to sell MLM, I'm not babysitting with a seizure disorder that has no diagnosed name, I cannot take inbound calls with A Very Loud House, and lots of other restrictions. I'm not complaining. I am truly looking for That! One! Idea! To! Strike! I can, blog! I can, moderate message boards. I can...uh...make a MEAN macaroni and cheese.
