It's time for new specs again.  I am entirely sick of looking at these.  They are scratched to hell, falling down my nose.

I am hoping to grab my RX from last year,  and go elsewhere to buy glasses.  I would like to pay less, and maybe get two pairs.  I am also going to order some contacts, to have.  I refuse to wear them on a daily basis, but to have, they're nice.

It's difficult to pick frames online - when you can't try them on.


I am all out of steam and ideas.

We went to Chili's for dinner tonight.  It is nowhere near as "good" as I remember it being.  That said, it's maybe because the last time I went there (since I don't remember any visits post-op?) I had a stomach and could just EAT in quantity.  It's funny how when you are eating preschool portions, you expect them to be of much better QUALITY.  No, really.   My husband ordered a steak, medium rare, and it was just blah.  My ribs were edible, but again, blah.

We don't go out often either, so I hate wasting money on crap food.  But, whatever, at least we were able to go somewhere, right?  Next time it won't be "Chili's."

And, now that I've looked at the Nutrition Stats - holy shit - we won't be going back.

And, having a iced drink dumped in your laps makes it more fun, no?  (Thanks baby!   LOL)

  2. The same.  We've done it a few times.  In fact we were going to do it again this year, either by car or plane, Dad put reservations on hold at Disneyworld, but then he got vacation-fright.  "What if!?!"  Watching everyone lose their jobs - vacation seems like a scary proposition.

My last out of the house job, coffee.  Way different than this, eh?

Ginni Labree from Palermo, Maine said she applied to several restaurants before being hired at the Grand View. All the restaurants declined to hire her because of her lack of experience.

"I'm so excited, so excited to have a job," she said.

The coffee shop jobs are paying off. One waitress received a $100 tip for a cup of coffee, and most of the wait staff make about $30 a table.

Nectar Sweets Syntrax Vanilla Bean Torte.

I don't know how I got this far into my post WLS life without reviewing any of this line of proteins. Syntrax Nectar Sweets, in Vanilla Bean Torte, today.  I went to get some information from the manufacturers website, and it scared the crap out of me "PRODUCT!"  It speaks.  Yikes.  (The website had automatic AUDIO, website owners - DO NOT DO THAT.)

Upon opening the sample pack, it smelled amazing, intensely vanilla.  The powder is super light and fluffy and I anticipated a delicious shake.  I mixed it with, as directed, eight ounces of cold water, and shook it in a shaker cup.  It blended to a nearly perfect clear consistency, but with foam.  It has specks of vanilla bean, I don't know if they're real vanilla bean, but they are there!

Again, this powder, even mixed smells super.  A M A Z I N G, even.

I took a sip, the initial taste WAS vanilla and good, but then it tasted odd to me, right after getting it in my mouth, it was weird.  Weird also was the shade of yellow.

I let it sit in my mouth like I am wine-tasting.  Thin, and slightly sour-ish.  Sour isn't the right word, but I am puckering and making a bad face.  Maybe had I mixed it with milk - it was be a better choice?  Probably, but I do not drink milk. 

Then, after drinking a sip, and sitting a moment, I got the dry sticky lips and icky after feel.  I am sipping it still, trying to see if it's just me.  Still sipping.  It's not changing.

Ah well.  This is another flavor that I will add to the "good if I doctor it up" list.  If I add ice, a touch of milk, and something, maybe frozen blackberries, it would be fine, because it IS sweet enough.

Time for truth.

As you get further out from your weight loss surgery date, things get harder.  Not for everybody, but I think most would agree that it does get more difficult to stay "on track."

Maybe early out you struggled because you could not get enough nutrition in or liquids.  I struggled with both for a short time but within months I could get in plenty.

Some people have trouble for longer times, my mother in law still can't eat normally, and she is several years out.  She will eat protein bars and usually they are okay, but give her real food, and she's writhing and miserable and pacing, telling you that she "should not have eaten that, I guess there won't be any dinner tonight, uuuugh."  Some post-ops live with distress, endoscopy, diltations, etc.  If the doctors do not find a problem, they just live with it.

On the other extreme, there are people that can eat nearly everything and never, ever have a problem.  Way to go.  Maybe they follow the rules, or maybe they are just lucky.

The worst part of their situation is a few may revert back to pre-operative eating habits in excess because, they "never dump!"  Lots may get sick but do it anyway, the bad feelings do not surpass getting to eat what they want.  Some eat to fall asleep even, in a carb-coma. Some, might eventually act as if they never had their guts rearranged at all, and really don't care.  I suppose if you get to a certain point, or a certain regain, you become hopeless, and feel that your "surgery failed," so why bother?  This is more common than you think, I bet.

There are post-ops who have the will power to stick to an eating plan or strict diet, and are just fine too.  You do not see these kind of people in support forums, though, they don't post often.  I often wonder where they ARE.  I have yet to meet one in person.  Sometimes I also wonder if they're putting up a show, just to avoid questions.  Sure, at 6, 9, 12, 18 even 24 months, I think anybody can claim to be following the rules, but it's so much easier then.  What are these people doing at 5 or 10 years out?

Then there's me, and anyone like me.  We can eat a whole hell of a lot.  (Well, it's individual.) 

We struggle.  We fight.  We try to persevere.  If we gain a few pounds, we cut back until they are gone. 

Some of us roux en y'ers have gastric dumping, hard, but not always.  What felt fine yesterday, may make us sick tomorrow, and there is no rhyme or reason to it.  (Example:  I have been a fan of brown rice vegetable sushi rolls, low calorie and delicious.  I can't eat them anymore.  Sick, intestinally, every time.)  We just try to keep our heads above water, and try to prevent problems by doing the right thing most of the time.

We're not perfect.  Show me someone who is, and I will show you someone who is lying.

So, tell me:

  • Are you a long term post op, how far out? 
  • How would you define your eating habits now?  
  • What are your worst habits?
  • Have you been successful in your weight loss and maintenance?  Regains?
  • Are you perfect?

Thursday's Food.

Weight - Haven't.

I actually wrote everything down yesterday, I will go back and finish calculating, but I think I was juuuuuust at my limit.  Certainly ending the night with bread was awesome, but, whatever. 

Today:

  • 7am - CLICK, ice, water, 2 ounces unsweetened soy milk, cocoa powder
  • 10am - 1 low fat string cheese
  • 12pm - 1 Atkins Peanut Butter Cup (Wait, were these recalled?)  :x  1 sample pack Syntrax Protein
  • 1:30pm - Small green salad, olive oil, 1 low fat string cheese
  • 2:00pm - ISS Oh Yeah Good Grab Almond Fudge Brownie
  • 3:30pm  - Soy cappuccino
  • 4:00pm - 2 low fat string cheese 
  • At some point - white roll, butter. 
  • 6:30pm - Turkey burger, 1 slice 2% cheese, dip of ketchup 
  •   1400 calories here.

Now, would I eat this?  Hells yeah, once.  I would get one and split it with my family.  You can do the math on that nutrition.  Or, I could pull out a ass flavored protein bar!  Hmm, what do you think I would pick, given the circumstances or being at a Mardi Gras celebration?  Chances are, I'd skip everything and look for coffee.  But, just sayin'.

I was vacuuming.  I put some stinky baking soda sprinkles on the rug in the office.  I opened the window to air out the room, because of the overly scented stink.  My six year old thought it was too cold, and went to close the window.  The damn thing (unknown to me) fell on her.  Shattered.  She is very, very lucky, that it did not hurt her.

What is ironic about this - is that I had a window company out here to give us a quote on replacing the windows on the first floor, they are mostly already replacements, not even that old some are as new as 2002, but they are JUNK quality.  This proves it.  (We're in a different house, it came with it's own problems.)

The window installation is scheduled for a few weeks from now, but the credit company lowered our limit to less than the cost of the windows we bought AFTER we signed on the dotted line for the stupid things.  Now I have several broken windows - this being the most obviously ruined one.  I have no idea if we can actually get the windows.

We can't win.

I woke up with a headache again.  Two Excedrin Migraine and it faded, which is super because we are back to the same old today.  The big kids went back to school, Dad is of course at work, and T and I are on our own until the late afternoon.  It is becoming harder though, this child is very, um, crafty?  She does things that the older kids never did, thought of doing, or maybe I just don't remember them trying.  Right at this very moment (so I have to go and stop it right now, hold on) she is pushing a wooden chair from the dining room, into the kitchen, over the doorway hump and to the cabinet, to climb up and try to snag a snack.  ALL DAY LONG SHE DOES THINGS LIKE THIS.  (Hold on, BRB.)  Okay.  I have put the chairs closest to the kitchen up on the table.  GAH.  The older kids did not try crap like that - maybe it's because we were always in a smaller space - and could not really get out of my line of sight?  This child can - very quickly leave my sight and I am forever chasing her.  I have to shut all doors, block her bedroom door from closing and locking, and the bathroom?  Forget the bathroom(s) she unrolls TP, dumps out any soap that is near her into the tub and "makes bubbles!"  AHHH.  (That was also today, while I helped one of the big kids with her backpack in the hall next to her.)  Everything has to be closed, locked, blocked and deferred.  "Here, do this instead!"  

On a good note, nobody else is here for at least 8:45 am to late afternoon to influence my eating.  (That was the point of this post.)  The baby can't really ask for the crap that triggers me to graze.  She just wants whatever she sees, just now, it was peaches.  I am not going to even touch peaches.  GACK.

Yesterday, someone who shall remain nameless said, out loud, "I am going to need something sweet." 

That person was basically asking permission to bake something, make something or buy something carbolicious and forbidden.  I nearly took his head off.  I CANNOT HAVE THIS SHIT AROUND ME.  This is a huge problem.  

In the spirit of being honest, we have had this problem since the very beginning when we were able to indulge in a litte. more. normal. food.  If you have been reading, you know this.  He is a giant carb addict, I am nearly as bad if the food is available to me.  I don't physically purchase it, because I will eat it if it's in my arm reach.  "Brownie?  SURE!  One won't hurt."  Six pieces two days later - and I am all, "WHY WERE THOSE IN THE HOUSE?"  He doesn't seem to get that.  Don't tempt the dragon, right?  Don't bother.  Don't buy it.  Don't cook it.  Don't make it available.  You can tell me until you are BLUE in the face, "Beth, don't eat it.  It's your willpower, just don't."  BULLSHIT.  If you have someone BAKING COOKIES in your house?!   "Just one."  It's never just one.  It's one now, one later, one tommorrow.

Part of the main reason I got so obese in the first place was falling prey to his food demons.  "Cheeseburger sub?  French Fries?  Maybe a Little Debbie later?"  SURE!   Now, it's different, he doesn't bring home single-wrapped $1 goodies, ever.  I would maim him.  It's a more veiled attempt at carb-eating, it's the box of Ghiradelli Brownie Mix (just an example, we haven't actually had that here) and yesterday, a pan of Grape-Nut pudding.  (I  CANNOT EAT THAT, it is a seriously disgusting texture.)  But, the smell?  Heavenly.  "What is in that, anyway?"  He replies, "Cream, eggs, 1 cup of sugar, etc."  We need this why?  He said, "I need something sweet."   This was because I begged him NOT to make FUDGE.  FUDGE!  Really.  He makes that, and then we are tempted with it until he throws the excess away.  

Please don't bitch at me - I am not his mother - and I truly hate whining about it to him - it gets nowhere - and then what?  Muffins?  When he's not here - he eats countless muffin-tops - I know it.  He works where there is a Dunkin Donuts within smelling distance.  He drinks assloads of coffee extra light with cream, and orders muffins or cruellers.  He obviously doesn't dump, if that is your question, but every roux en y post op eventually knows EXACTLY HOW MUCH TO EAT before dumping. 

That's one muffin top, or one half cruller, thanks.  


Broccoli, White Bean & Cheddar Soup

A warm, comforting soup, with about 150 calories per serving.


Broccoli, White Bean & Cheddar Soup

Active Time:  20 Minutes
Total Time:  20 Minutes 6 servings, scant 1 cup each

Broccoli, white beans and Cheddar blend together deliciously in this quick and healthy soup.

INGREDIENTS
1 14-ounce can reduced-sodium chicken broth or vegetable broth
1 cup water
1 pound broccoli crowns, trimmed and chopped (about 6 cups)
1 14-ounce can cannellini beans, rinsed
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon ground white pepper
1 cup shredded extra-sharp Cheddar cheese
DIRECTIONS
Bring broth and water to a boil in a medium saucepan over high heat. Add broccoli, cover and continue cooking until tender, about 8 minutes. Stir in beans, salt and pepper and continue cooking until the beans are heated through, about 1 minute.

Transfer half the mixture to a blender with half the cheese and puree. (Use caution when pureeing hot liquids). Transfer to a bowl. Repeat with the remaining broccoli mixture and cheese. Serve warm.
